About

Expert Performer offers evidence-based support to people involved in challenging performance activities. Expert Performer promotes the following approaches:
- The use of scientifically validated strategies (when the stakes are high you need to be confident that the method you're using has the best possible chance of success)
- A solution-focused approach (peak performance training is targeted and specific - you need to focus your attention on the areas that will deliver real performance benefits)
- Brief interventions (peak performance training should equip you with the best possible methods in the shortest possible time frame)
- Client autonomy (peak performance training is equivalent to being given a new, impressive toolkit full of tools - once you've got the toolkit, the tools are yours forever)

Performance psychology has typically focused on the needs of athletes, largely ignoring the needs of performers working in other highly competitive domains. Sometimes sport psychologists work with non-athletes, but sport psychology interventions do not always work as well with other groups of people. Different competitive activities attract different types of people, and different personalities respond to different approaches. I specialize in a couple of these neglected niche areas, and I have particular expertise in working with performing artists and finance/business and sales professionals. In addition to my private consultancy practice, I am employed at The Australian National University where I teach "Psychological Strategies for Peak Performance" in the College of Arts and Social Sciences.
